DESCRIPTION

For 6 months (October 2010 – April 2011) I lived in India, with a grant from the Portuguese Fundação Oriente, to document and learn 2 of their most famous and traditional textile printing/decoration techniques – block printing Ajrakh and Bandhani Tie & Dye. Although my research was conducted around many places, I was mainly based in Bhuj, Kutch, in Gujarat State. My mentors were the bandhani master Abduljabbar Khatri and the master block printer Aurangzeb Khatri.

PROJECT

After going back to Portugal, in partnership with the Orient Museum, in Lisbon, we curated:

  • an exhibition with all the materials I collected during my stay in India
  • a talk & workshops, presented by the above-mentioned Indian masters
